10/12/20 Matt 1:1 Tutorial:
Recommended artists to look at:
Joanna Paterson
specialises in child photography -> love how playful her images are. Really capture the energy and imagination of kids which is what I want to do myself for this project. It's like she thinking like a child - anythings possible, taking risks, a lot of movement and colour - definitely things to consider in my photos.
Jan Von Holleben
Very successfully captures and recreates how imaginative, resourceful and creative children are through play through the very DIY nature of the backdrops and props and very dynamic poses of the models. Like children, the images don't take themselves too seriously which I really love and after looking at Holleben's work is definitely an approach I would like to take with my own photos for this project as it would really create that playful and vibrant look that I'm going for.
discussed the possible problematic nature of portraying a woman like a child - big issue of making female models look younger than they are and in other medias such as film and pornography = created a culture of normalising the sexualisation of children. Therefore talked about presenting my model still in a youthful and playful way but through 90's rave and early 2000s fashion which was very gaudy, colourful and playful and also very prevalent in my childhood.
90's rave culture and early 2000's fashion moodboard for shoot styling inspiration:
- a lot of colour, esp neon
- childlike looking designs on tee shirts
- lots of accessories
- baggy trousers
- clashing patterns
- excess
- OTT!
^ the bright colours and clash of patterns reflect the culture and chaos of the time - especially 2000's - post 9/11 world, financial crash 2008, Iraq war 2003 etc.
Recent resurgence in Y2K aesthetics in fashion, music, instagram and other social media.
This year has seen a re-emergence of 2000's inspired fashion and music, may be why I'm particularly drawn to this style for this project, recent popularisation of this style has been very nostalgic for me, remember a lot of the bright colours of the clothing, crazy patterns and more electronic sound of the music from my childhood.
Hyperpop
a microgenre characterized by an absurd and maximalist take on popular music. It draws on dance and electronic music, and blends elements of trance, emo, cloud rap, and hip hop and sounds from the early noughties. Emerged into the main stream with artists such as Grimes and SOPHIE and its popularisation on TikTok.
Hyperpop aesthetic:
very gaudy, over the top, neon, brings in a lot of imagery from Manga and Japanese harajuku fashion.
Instagram:
There's been a definite trend recently on instagram, especially fashion and zine accounts of using Y2K aesthetics - fish eye lens, collaging, DIY feel, lots of neon. I definitely want to they and experiment with some of these techniques to make my photos look as 2000's esque as I can.
Y2K aethetics:
Very space, cyber punk influenced images that I'm particularly drawn to and will take inspiration from for my own images. Very playful with perspective, elongated figures created through upward pointing fish eye and wide angle lenses - I have a fish eye lens so will definitely have a go at playing around with perspective in my own images.
Plan for my own photoshoot:
- dress my model in a couple of 90's rave and Y2K inspired outfits -> lots of colour, clashing patterns, excessive accessories etc.
- have a very DIY feel to the shoot like Jon Von Holleben - paint my own backdrop in a very low tech way and use house hold objects such as old toys and foil. Be playful!
- ideas for different shots:
*playing hide and seek behind trees on location - very childlike activity
*playing with toys
*making mess
*imaginging/in awe
*laying in toys
*use fish eye lens from below to create distorted effect
